Cocovan was born in Paris, France, to an Iranian musician father and a French mother. She was trained in classical music during her childhood playing the violin and the flute. It was at 15 that she started teaching herself the guitar and immediately composed her first song. What could have been a fad transformed quickly into an all-encompassing passion. Spending virtually all her free time in music venues, she soon made some decisive encounters. Indeed, at 17, she met her first and most influential collaborator to date, Florian Dubos, the guitarist of multi-platinum French band Kyo, with whom she recorded her earliest demos. Parisian nightlife progressively transformed Cocovan’s sonic identity. From pop-folk influenced by Alanis Morissette, Lauryn Hill and Coldplay, she developed a more electronic sound atmosphere after discovering New Order while burning the dancefloor at the infamous parisian club “Le Baron”. Captivated by ‘80s electro clash and reconciled with the ‘90s pop she listened to growing up, she started adding synthetic elements to her folk universe, creating a brisk, light and playful sound she has been working around ever since. The singer imagines her work as both a musical and visual performance. Similar to many artists she admires such as Prince or David Bowie, she progressively separated her stage persona from her former identity, and came up with the moniker COCOVAN as a name to crystallize her project. Travel has also played an important part in Cocovan’s musical development, opening new horizons and unforeseen experiences. In the summer of 2010, the young artist spent several months in the lower east side of New York, an experience that boosted her career and ambition. Since then she has been living between the Big Apple, Los Angeles and her native Paris. The French singer draws inspiration from many enigmatic sources. Science fiction, retro futurism and Disney movies fascinate her, while the inspiring presence of designers and artists - such as Serge Lutens or Jean Paul Gaultier in the French cultural sphere - have colored her imagery. Cocovan creates a universe where pop meets magic, and fashion and fantasy are intertwined. Having released debut EP Data Image in 2013, she is currently based in Paris filming her very own web series “Cocorama”, a musical and visual diary project, and working on a second EP, to be released in the near future.
