Il Giardino Violetto was a gothic rock band from Rome, Italy, formed by Carlo (vocals, bass) and Serena (vocals, guitar). The band was born in 1989, from an advertisement posted up by Carlo in a record shop. A guitarist guy and a drummer girl named Serena replied to the ad. They started playing Joy Division covers in Serena's garage, but after some months of playing, the line-up is reduced from three members to just two, with the original guitarist leaving, Serena switching to guitar, and adding a drum machine. They spent almost a year in that garage, playing music, reading books, writing lyrics, bass lines, guitar riffs and drum machine patterns, with lack of skill and loads of ideas. At some point Carlo and Serena decided to record their music in a real studio. They created their first and only demo tape, "Danse Macabre". Beside the written lyrics and some bass/guitar parts, the tracks are almost completely improvised, especially the vocal parts. Darkness, claustrophobia, insight, altered states are the main themes in the lyrics. Il Giardino Violetto played just one gig in October 1989, at Uonna Club, legendary club in Rome's underground scene. After that, Carlo and Serena kind of lost interest in playing together, and by 1990, the duo split up, with the two members taking their own ways not to meet again. In 2004 the Italian goth label In the Night Time decided to reissue the demo tape on CD for the first time. It contains the digitally remastered demo, plus the remixes of two songs, "L.iquid S.ensations D.isplay (Throat Remix)" and "Litanie a Satana (Caustic FM Remix)" by S*PHZ. Read more on Last.fm.
