For roughly a decade Imaginary Johnny has existed in several shapes and sizes. The project has gone from songwriter Stuart Wolferman’s bedroom-recording solo project of the fist album, The Upside of the Downside, to the darker and more collaborative sound of 2008’s Only Chimneys and 2011’s Dig. Of the debut record, Magnet said “Wolferman’s summery ballads flutter past like sweet visions of rose colored icing on a three-tier wedding cake.” Though the band and sound has and continues to evolve, the balance of poetic songwriting, powerful minimalist performance, and studio playfulness remains constant. Tightly crafted songs about outcasts and tiny moments add up to something bigger and combine to create a sound that is undeniably honest. Imaginary Johnny is Adam Sylvia on guitar, Stuart Wolferman on vocals and keys, and Marc Alan Goodman on bass. The newest record also features both Ismail Lawal and Andrew Soto on drum kit.
