The members of Kalev are: Sam Handley / Bass Guitar. Oliver Hickman / Percussion. Andrew Nicholls / Vocals, Guitar. Cian O'Neill / Electronics. Ben Tarrant-Brown / Lead Guitar. Kalev is a five piece band based in London. They produce dark electronic guitar music, made with pounding rhythms and white noise. The band has come from the rethinking of Stockholm Syndrome, a Lichfield-based post-punk band set up while the members were half way through high school. Benjamin Tarrant-Brown, guitarist, went to Central Saint Martins College of Art, London, in 2002. The other members of the band, Sam Handley, Oliver Hickman and Andrew Nicholls, moved down to London in the latter part of 2003. Stockholm Syndrome underwent a change in name and sound, becoming suffused with electronica when fellow Saint Martins student, Cian O’Neill, joined in the beginning of 2004. Discarding the briefly adopted name Motel, Kalev came formerly into existence after summer 2004. Kalev have a wide range of influences, common to all of which is the same dark sensibility and strongly rhythmic / melodic turn of phrase to which they attain in their own music. Artists which have been important to Kalev are: At the Drive-in, Nirvana, Squarepusher, Tool, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Kraftwerk, The Micronauts, The Doors, Joy Division, Aphex Twin and Depeche Mode. Kalev’s music has pounding rhythms. The lyrical content is visceral and vocal delivery sinewed; confrontational. The guitars scratch out driving and intertwining latin-edged riffs. Sampling is used, for narrative, and tone. These components, in tandem with battering white noise, make up dark, electronic-fused guitar music. Live, individual songs are interlaid and interwoven, and played as a whole piece. (Taken from Kalevband.co.uk) Read more on Last.fm.
