Spyritual first made a sound when a 12 year old finnish boy Juha Tuukkanen discovered making music with machines. At first the sounds seemed quite electronic, but during the years, mainly because of the material he was mostly listening, the idea of a more organic music started to develop. The discovery of the more acoustic Spyritual-sound went on, and at the same time Juha found out the exitement of musically collaborating with other people. After some years of writing and producing with other artists, he again decided to start going into the studio alone in the dark last hours of the night. Soon these sessions started to bear fruit and also the old Spyritual-material was dusted out of the shelves. Meanwhile, on the northern side of Finland, a girl called Terhi Koivisto was awaken to the existence of music while listening to her mum play and sing tender songs to her in the long winter nights. Singing by the bonfire on summer camps in small Kokkola-town encouraged and inspired her to start developing her self-expression as a singer. By the age of 18 she had been involved as a lead vocalist in different local live-bands ranging musically from funk to ethnic, but then decided to move to Helsinki because of studies in cinematography. After some years, she met up with Juha through a mutual musical friend and Spyritual was given a human voice. Together Juha & Terhi found a mutual passion for a certain kinds of sounds and started to compose and write music with no special genres or definitions in mind. The musical platform was at first quite free and somewhat based in drum&bass. Now, after years of developing, the music of Spyritual can be described as deep electro-acoustic nu-jazz. If you know what to look for, in the music of Spyritual there is a sence of origin present. That origin is Finland. With it's strong, beautiful and contrasting nature, it's hard not to let the surroundings affect your emotions. It's also a common legend that finnish people don't talk much, but mostly keep to themselves. When this is the case, other forms of communication can, and are sometimes forced to take place.
