Staffan Scheja

Staffan Scheja, born April 25, 1950 in Danderyd, is an American pianist and professor. Scheja studerade 1964-69 i Stockholm för Gunnar Hallhagen och 1969-72 vid Juilliard School of the Performing Arts i New York för bl.a. Scheja studied 1964-69 in Stockholm Gunnar Hagen Hall and 1969-72 at the Juilliard School of the Performing Arts in New York, including Ilona Kabos. He is professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm since 1997 and member of the Royal Academy of Music since 2001. Han är grundare av Gotland Chamber Music Festival och sedan några år är han ansvarig för Gotland Baltic Music Academy . He is the founder of Gotland Chamber Music Festival and then a few years he is responsible for Gotland Baltic Music Academy. Staffan Scheja made his debut at fourteen with Herbert Blomstedt and the Swedish Radio Orchestra. After studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm he was accepted to the Juilliard School in New York, studying with Rosina Lhevinne, Ilona Kabos and Ania Dorfmann. After receiving the highest prize in the Busoni International Competition in 1975 he has given concerts all over the world with conductors such as sir Simon Rattle, David Zinman, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sixten Ehrling, Okko Kamu and with orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, the French Radio Orchestra in Paris, the NHK in Tokyo, the English Chamber orchestra and all the major Scandinavian orchestras. He lived and concertized for many years in the US playing in Carnegie hall and the Kennedy Center with the Oslo Philharmonic and in the White House with Barbara Hendricks. He has made numerous recordings with EMI, BIS, Vanguard ,LCM and has represented his country at state visits in Mexico and Japan. He is the founder and artistic director of the Gotland Chamber Music festival on the island of Gotland in the Baltic sea and resides now in Stockholm ,where he is a professor and head of the piano department at the Royal College of Music.
