The Northern Coast (also known simply as TNC) consists of one genre-defying Mancunian by the name of Rob Rochford. http://www.robrochford.co.cc It is rare when a bands name conjures up the perfect images to describe its sound. In most cases the listener is asked to attach their own meaning and imagery to a name, only after thorough listening. This is not most cases. The name The Northern Coast instantly begins to hint at what is to come. Coastal regions can be at once lush and beautiful, and other times barren, stripped down to the harshest of environments. With the coast, comes the tide, and with the tide comes change. Changing and adapting to life as it comes and goes, while carving tracks in the world beneath us begins to describe the mandate of TNC. Based out of Manchester, united kingdom TNC would almost be expected to owe a portion of their heritage to their mancunian forefathers. The Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, and Oasis have all helped to solidify that city as one of the most revered in the musical world. However it is the classic american songwriter that seems to have seeped into the soul of the 'Coast. Owing a debt as much to Simon and Garfunkel or Tim Buckley as modern day songwriters like Sufjan Stevens or Low, The Northern Coast have managed to allow room for influence while carving out a creative niche all their own. TNC has been known to spotlight fellow musicians on his recordings and albums, such as the fellows from Money Money. Rochford's work has also included involvement with the bands Ad Hoc, Floodline (acoustic), Force 3, line:flood, a sideproject called We Are The Underground, and most recently The Canoes, with 2co member Ryan Kohls. http://www.thenortherncoast.moonfruit.com http://www.myspace.com/thenortherncoast http://mogulus.com/tnclive Regarding the obvious controversal nature of the new remastering/ cover/ vocal addition Re: Classics album, in his own words: "DISCLAIMER So, you may have realised……this isn’t my music. It is my vocal, but not my music. All music rights belong to Ratatat and their association publishing companies. PLEASE do not sue me, I have no intention of sell these versions or making them available for download, if anything it works as promo for the original artist, so let’s be friends :) Ok, so here’s the story behind the album…. I was driving home from work one night, and I decided the journey would be a little nicer with some music. I was skipping through some albums and came across Classics by Ratatat, and picked that for the magical position of entertainment. Now, this album had never sat right with me, but I had never lost interest in it for some reason. So I put it on, and as I was listening I started to hum melody lines along with the songs, and then make some up of my own which is when I came up with the idea. I thought, why not do a version of this album with vocals, it could sound great. I KNOW some will consider this sacrilegious and completely against the spirit of the band, but it was never intended to replace but be an addition to the original. Hope you enjoy it." -Rob Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
