Inukshuk Morninglights Inukshuk are a new three piece based in Nottingham, and were formed when vocalist Matt Rai returned from Canada and decided to take his solo career to what he has called 'the next level.' The songs put me in mind of the criminally unappreciated and much missed Martin Grech, with their epic, vast sounds, and hypnotic guitar and piano phrases. The songs never stray too near to being anthemic, rescued by searing distorted guitars or a guttural drum beat. The six tracks here take the listener on a rollercoaster ride starting with the bombast and gothic indulgence of Paint, and ending with the lower than lo-fi, almost front-room recording of Filter. This is a talent to be reckoned with, and if they can survive the birth pangs of a newly formed group, I'm eagerly awaiting the chance to hear them play some live gigs around the region. Chris Xenra- Sandman Magazine Unashamedly vast and grand, but also grounded in and Matt Rai's mostly restrained and melancholy vocals, staying just the right side of anthemic. Hints of something industrial, something metal, something acoustic, something electronic and usually in the same song, help to keep the melodrama varied and compelling. 'Paint' stops too soon to fall into the epic indulgence that its size and metal-friendly guitars threaten; 'morninglights' swoons in on synths and sadness and piano sweeps, but then gets busted up with bang-and-clatter industrial drums; 'Tunnel' bounces and pounds along, swells several times, revealing alongside its fellow tracks that Inukshuk are considerable creators of the build-up. But there are always pay-offs in the melodies and melodrama too. I like them lots. Buck of I Am The Twister Read more on Last.fm.
